My first belly dance costume 2001
I took my first belly dance class in 1999. One of my friends was directing a schoolplay in 2001 which was set on the Turkish coast. She asked me to create a short performance piece, teach it to two teenagers and perform it as part of the play. I was really excited about this and started to work on my first belly dance costume! A lot of the costumes for the actors were made from burned out velvet (velours de panne) so that's what I chose. Combined with a stretchy semi-sheer fabric, I made a skirt, top, sleeves and belt. The headpiece that I bought to match the costume was used as a crown for queen Dido during the play. Looking back, I' m glad I didn't wear it. My taste changed during the years and I wouldn't wear it with my current costumes.
In the headshot you can also see the first digital camera that I bought because I wanted to add pictures to my website. It didn't have an LCD screen so I just snapped away hoping that one of the pictures would be good enough. It got replaced by a Nikon coolpix camera in 2003 which I still use as of august 2007. |
